So what is The Daemons Project?
I am producing a book that is based on a series of dreams I had when I was 9-14 years old, when I was going through a very traumatic time dealing with the loss of a sibling, divorce of my parents, my father being forced out of my life, and physical and mental abuse as the hand of my alcoholic mother.
I wrote down the dreams in a journal, which continued over several years. When the dream stopped, I tucked the journal away and eventually lost it. I then found it again a few years ago after several more years of traumatic experiences when it unexplainably resurfaced during another difficult period in my life.
I believe this journal is a message to me (and people like me) who struggle with certain things in their life. I decided to take it as a hint and really delve into it as a project. These past few years have been difficult and really this project is what has saved me.
The final incarnation will be an art book/fantasy story which is actually a philosophical look at the issues we have as humans. Dark Steampunk in design, It is written for artists, empaths, kindred spirits, old souls, etc and is meant to help with the creative process especially for people who suffer with depression, self-esteem issues, anxiety, etc. and continuously have an ongoing war inside their head about choices.
The story centers around a scientific endeavor by Dr. Grymm studying 13 Sister Daemons who live in the darkness at the beginning of time and hold some sort of strong tether to our dream world and us as humans.
The Daemons are:
Each of the daemons reflects a different characteristic of human nature. The story is set up like a scientific journal left behind by a scientist who was studying them using a device that could capture their images through dreams and nightmares. It tackles duality in words, challenges the way we think, and hopefully reaches out to some people on a deeper level using philosophy and personal challenges.
The book will consist of not only illustrations, but also photographs. I am working with 13 women to create each of those Daemons using custom makeup, masks, prosthetics, costumes and props. Though the book is the final product, I am curating a gallery show for the month of April 2017 at the Hartford Art Space to celebrate the project and all involved with an interactive experience about the story. I am going to launch an Indigogo campaign to make this all happen.
